Each year, VOA Ohio & Indiana partners with the community to give kids the confidence they need to start the school year through Operation Backpack®. It’s a program that gives local area children a new backpack and school supplies to start the school year. It’s also a program that demonstrates the true power of community toward a common goal. Individuals, companies, church groups, service organizations and more come together to ensure every child has the tools to succeed for the school year.
We sat down with one of those partners to get to the heart of why people come back each year to support Operation Backpack. Furniture Fair has been a longtime valued collaborator and continues to expand their reach each year. In 2024 they’re including stores beyond the Cincinnati and Dayton area to Indianapolis.
Let’s get down to kindness with Furniture Fair Marketing Director, Craig Daniels!
Q: Why does Furniture Fair participate in Operation Backpack?
A: We aim to empower the children in our community by giving them the confidence they need to succeed from day one of school. With so much already on their plates, this is our way of making their lives a bit easier.
Q: What does it mean to you to be part of this community effort that helps all kids start the school year with the tools they need?
A: Being part of this event is very humbling for us. We owe everything to our community, and having the chance to positively impact local youth is something we are very proud of.
Q: What is the atmosphere like amongst staff, do they get excited about Operation Backpack?
A: Our staff is very enthusiastic, with everyone eager to contribute and support the initiative. I always enjoy coming into the office in the morning and seeing how team members have gone out of their way to stop and pick up items for the drive.
Q: Why is it important for people to donate to Operation Backpack?
A: Donating to Operation Backpack is crucial because it ensures that every child has the essential tools to succeed in school, fostering a more equitable and supportive community.

Indiana Operation Backpack Campaign will be collecting donations until July 22 with the Ohio campaign running through August 9.
