Filling a Gap in the Community
The impacts of expecting mothers with substance use disorder (SUD) can affect whole families and communities – newborns suffer neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), minors enter the child welfare system, and mothers often lose custody of their children.
- Ohio has one of the highest rates of drug overdose deaths involving opioids in the U.S. which has been highly correlated to the high NAS birth rate. (CDC, Drug Overdose Deaths, 2019)
- The numbers of NAS births have seen an 82% increase in rate of newborns exposed to opiates in the past eight years and NAS birth spend nearly doubled from 2016-2018.
- Columbus has the highest NAS birth rate of all major Ohio cities.
Our Fresh Start Center in Columbus, Ohio will offer trauma-informed, evidence-based clinical services. We’ll have licensed and trained treatment professionals and will focus on whole-family recovery. Fresh Start Recovery helps women recover from SUD, breaks the cycle of addiction in families, improves health outcomes, and promotes the birth of healthy babies.
About Fresh Start Recovery Center
Fresh Start is one of the few family-focused programs in the country. It combines intensive addiction treatment, behavioral health treatment services, and family support to address underlying concerns that inhibit physical, mental, and behavioral health. Additionally, these programs prevent family separation, provide prolonged care and support for mothers and infants, reduce the risk of relapse, and lead to fewer neonatal abstinence syndrome and NICU births.
