Set Sail on Creativity: Make a DIY Pirate Ship Cat Scratching Post!

Ahoy, crafty cat lovers! National Craft Month is here, and what better way to celebrate than by building something fun and functional for your feline first mate? If your kitty dreams of adventure (or just loves a good scratch), this DIY Pirate Ship Cat Scratching Post is the purr-fect project. Plus, you can find most of these materials at VOA Thrift!

Grab your glue guns, hoist the sails (or at least some textured rope), and let’s craft a ship fit for a furry captain. Ready to embark on this creative voyage? Let’s dive in!

DIY Cat Pirate Ship Scratching Post

Step 1: Gather your items:

  • Wood or heavy cardboard base
  • Fabric
  • Small wooden post (for gardening or other projects)
  • Rounded posts to hold sail (this could be piping, wooden spools, whatever you can find!)
  • Textured rope
  • Cap, wooden spools, or fabric for end caps
  • Staple gun
  • Glue gun
  • Drill
  • Screws

Step 2: Prepare the base materials.

You can use any shape for your base, whether it’s round, square, or rectangular. If you’re in the pirate spirit, you can shape the base similar to a wind-sail, but it’s not a requirement.

If you’re happy with the length of your post, keep it! If you’d like a guideline, we recommend 1-1 ½ feet tall.

Cut the posts for the sails, making sure one is slightly shorter than the other.

Step 3: Cover the base bottom board with material.

Measure the fabric by cutting 2-3 inches longer than the base.

Secure the ends to the bottom with a glue gun or staple gun.

Step 4: Prepare your posts.

Drill a small hole in the bottom of your mast post and two small holes for the crossbar posts.

Drill a small hole in the center of each of the crossbar posts.

Step 5: Secure your posts.

Secure the crossbar posts to the mast post with screws in the holes you created.

Screw in the mast post to secure the base.

Step 6: Wrap the rope around the posts and secure with a glue gun, middle tie, or carefully with a staple gun (you don’t want any loose staples!).

Step 7: If you have end caps for your post, screw or glue them on.

Step 8: Hoist the sails.

If you’d like to paint an emblem on the sail, do so now and let it dry! Then, create holes in the four corners and secure your sail with rope.

Bon voyage to you and your furry friend as you set sail for fun!
