The gift-giving season is here! If you’re looking for a trendy, fun way to wrap your gifts this year, it’s time to check out this 1,200-year-old Japanese tradition known as Furoshiki. Surprise your friends and family with gifts wrapped beautifully in festive cloth.

Furoshiki was first established in Japan out of necessity as a way to wrap produce and other goods to keep them fresh. It wasn’t long before the custom spread to gift wrapping! Today, Furoshiki can refer to the style of wrapping as well as the physical cloth for wrapping.

Did you know VOA Thrift stores carry fabric? You can take part in this eco-friendly wrapping style this season with a little help from us!

While there are many different patterns you can follow to wrap, there are technically only two requirements to Furoshiki:

  1. Wrap with fabric.
  2. The fabric must be square.

Check out the examples below and enjoy Furoshiki this season!
